Rodarte Designed Fancy Costumes For An LA Philharmonic Opera

Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte are two of the coolest designers out there. And not only did they create amazing the ballet costumes for Black Swan, the sisters are now designing pieces for the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s production of Don Giovanni.
The Mulleavy sisters collaborated with Swarovski to create six costumes for the three of the opera’s characters — Donna ElviraZerlina, and Donna Anna. The ensembles include headpieces, gowns, and wigs, and the designers used over 130,000 Swarovski crystals for the creations. That’s a lot of crystals!
Kate explains to WWD:
“It took a while to understand the characters, their motivations, and what we wanted to visualize. Frank [Gehry, who is designing the sets] told us from the beginning that it was about the music, and our job was to help that. The costumes are the kind of thing that you want to lift the music — you don’t want to compete or kill it.”
Lucky opera goers in the LA area can catch Don Giovanni at the Walt Disney Concert Hall starting this Friday, while the rest of us have to make do with sketches from Rodarte’s Facebook page. Sigh.
