Grace Coddington‘s upcoming memoir will surely shed some light on her impressive career, but a new exhibit provides a look into the Vogue creative director’s early life.A by-appointment-only art show dedicated to the photography of Coddington’s ex-husband Willie Christie is set to open at London’s Ivy Club next month. The show will feature intimate shots from the couple’s four year marriage, along with photos taken forVogue. In case you were wondering, Christie is no unknown. Some of the other luminaries featured in the September exhibit include Lynn Kohlman, Marie Helvin, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, and Jerry Hall. The vintage shots have been stored privately by the photographer for over 35 years.
Christie shot pics of a 30-year-old Coddington at the start of their marriage, and nearly 40 years later, he has nothing but good things to say about his ex-wife. Raves the photog:
“For me, she was still photographic heaven. She was so brilliant as a model because she had an appreciation and understanding of art in all its forms; mimicry, gentleness, and serenity. She understood everything that the clothes were trying to do. She became the image. She had then and still has, an absolute passion for all that she does. Photographically — and personally — Grace was everything I was looking for. And she was willing. Lucky me!”
Christie has kind words for Jerry Hall, too: “That hair! It had a personality all of its own. Nothing quite like it had been seen before, I think. And those long, long legs… She had a flamboyance. And she was funny. Glorious!”
