YSL Spring 2012 Campaign

After nine seasons of glossy ad campaigns shot by Inez & Vindoodh, YSL’s Stefano Pilati has decided to go a different route for the Spring 2012 campaign–and with a different photographer too, reports WWD.
Pilati tapped David Sims to shoot the moody campaign, featuring a punky-looking Mariacarla Boscono–a huge departure from last year’s colorful and light-filled Spring campaign with Arizona Muse. Could it be the Lisbeth Salander effect?

Francois Nars Shares His Holiday Makeup Tips and Secrets with Us

NARS holiday_2011The holidays are officially upon us. Do you have a makeup plan yet? You probably have a few more holiday events to attend, and of course there’s the night to end all nights coming up–New Year’s eve. Or maybe you just feel like getting dramatically made up for a random Wednesday night. Perfect.
We got to pick the brain of none other than Francois Nars, the creative director and founder of NARS Cosmetics. Nars is known for drama and color, and we couldn’t think of anyone better to answer all our pressing holiday makeup conundrums. Read on for his wise words and product suggestions.
On how to do a festive look without always going the smoky eye route:
“Shimmery colors and a dramatic look are ideal for a holiday party; Arabian Nights Trio Eyeshadow gives you both. A red lip is always classic, and Joyous Red Lipstick is the perfect amber red color that will update any looks.”
On how to work the metallic trend without going the predictable gold and silver route:
“For the holiday season, I recommend exploring new colors. Try metallics such as Etrusque (a metallic bronze) and Melusine (metallic lavender). It will give you a very sophisticated look that is very dramatic.”
Arabian Nights
On how to prevent glittery eye makeup from ending up all over your face:
“Be light-handed when you’re doing makeup. It’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality and how you apply it. Less is more!”
On festive alternatives to the red lip:
“I have a real love affair with lipstick – you could try a bold fuschia or pop of pink. It has such a strong impact on the face. You feel immediately elegant and chic and it gives the face a lot of strength. It gives you more power. And, if you don’t like it, take it off and try something else. Makeup is not a commitment!”

Iris Apfel for MAC

Iris Apfel for MAC
At 90 Iris Apfel becomes the latest star to collaborate with MAC to produce a bold 20-piece collection.
Born Iris Barrel in 1921, MAC’s latest collaborator worked at Women’s Wear Daily and for interior designer Elinor Johnson before launching a textile firm with her husband, Carl Apfel, called Old World Weavers in 1950. Up until her retirement from interior design in 1992 she worked on many projects, including work at the White House where she crossed paths with nine presidents: Truman, Eisenhower, Nixon, Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Reagan, and Clinton. The things she must have seen…
In recent years Iris has become a fashion icon, thanks in part to the 2005 exhibition Rara Avis (Rare Bird): The Irreverent Iris Apfel which celebrated her eclectic style – she was boldly mixing flea market finds with haute couture long before it became de rigeur. Now, The Museum of Lifestyle & Fashion History in Boynton Beach is looking to create a 93,000 square feet building with a gallery dedicated to the clothes, accessories and furnishings of Iris Apfel.
MAC’s exciting 20-piece collection includes lipsticks, eyeshadows and nail lacquers (among others) with names like Scarlet Ibis, Early Bird and Toco Toucan, and is a celebration of her colourful life and style. Always ahead of the curve, the lipstick Scarlet Ibis was used by make-up artist Andrew Gallimore for the Erdem spring/summer 12 show, proving that, at 90, Iris can still spot a trend.
The Iris Apfel collection goes on sale exclusively online from January.

Fail-Proof Manicure Tips

Love doing your nails but hate when you mess up? Getting a fail-proof manicure—whether it's a classic ruby red or extravagant rhinestone creation—is all about practice and knowing a few insider tricks. We spoke with Katie Cazorla, owner of The Painted Nail salon in Los Angeles and star of TV show Nail Files, about her favorite tips and tools for creating a flawless manicure.

Practice Makes Perfect

"Practicing designs and placing stones on something other than your nail—like artificial nail tips or small pieces of paper—is a great way to get better at nail art," says Katie. "It's good to start small. An easy beginner’s design is to make a circle of five dots, then use a toothpick to pull them all in toward the center and finish with a rhinestone, like a flower! It’s a good way to practice but it also gives a great result. Once you master it, try it on your nails or on a friend’s."
Beautylish recommends: Liquid Palisades. Use the tiny brush to paint this fast-drying gel onto the parts of your nail (like your cuticles), where you don't want polish. When you peel it off it will remove the unwanted nail polish, leaving the perfect shape. You can even use it to create cool nail designs!

Hydrate Your Nails

Making sure your fingertips are in good condition is an essential step in achieving a fail-proof manicure. Rough cuticles can make your manicure look unprofessional and unfinished. "I put cuticle oil on after I topcoat my mani and pedi," says Katie. "I apply a drop at the center of the cuticle and spread it toward both sides to give the polish extra shine and make it last longer. It's also great for freshening up a mani after a couple of days."
Beautylish recommends: The Painted Nail Sugar Cookie Cuticle Oil. “I apply this daily on my knuckles and cuticles to keep them moisturized,” says Katie.

Be Creative With Your Tools

Use acrylic paint and nail polish to create pretty designs, then go crazy and layer rhinestones, glitter, and lace to your nails. But be mindful of what you’ll use to apply the decals. “Tiny paintbrushes from art supply stores such as Michael's make painting designs super-easy,” says Katie. “It’s also wise to invest in a small spare brush to dip into polish remover to clean up polish that gets on your skin. I also love French brushes—nail art brushes with dotters on the other end. You can create beautiful effects and place rhinestones or crystals easily onto the nail with one tool."
Beautylish recommends: Revlon ColorStay Longwear Nail Enamel. This new polish (out in January) has the same glossy appeal as a gel or shellac manicure and lasts up to 11 days! It is removable with any drugstore polish remover and is the ideal long-lasting base for nail art.

About Face

“About Face,” a documentary, portrays a group of Seventies- and Eighties-era models as survivors, blessed with beauty, yet condemned by society’s less-than-tolerant view of aging and its relentless celebration of youth. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, who first photographed the models for a group portrait for Vanity Fair, wanted to delve deeper into their stories. Carol Alt, Marisa Berenson, Karen Bjornson, Christie Brinkley, Pat Cleveland, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Jerry Hall, Bethann Hardison, Beverly Johnson, China Machado, Paulina Porizkova, Isabella Rossellini and Lisa Taylor shared with Greenfield-Sanders their career highs and lows and personal disappointments. Kim Alexis, Nancy Donahue, Esmé Marshall, Eileen Ford, Dayle Haddon, Cheryl Tiegs, Christy Turlington and Calvin Klein also appear in the film. Sundance Film Festival on Monday revealed that “About Face” will have its premiere at the festival, which will be held Jan. 19 to 29. “About Face” will air on HBO in the summer. [WWD]

Valentino Doesn’t Think Raf Simons is the ‘Right Person’ for Dior (But the Staff at Dior Does)

Time for the design community to weigh in on the possibility of Raf Simons at Dior!
From Mr. Valentino Garavani himself, when asked byVogue UK whether he thought Simons was a good fit for the job:
“I’m not sure – it’s an amazing job, I don’t know if he would be the right person for it. John Galliano is difficult to replace. I think it’s important not to jump into things. It needs to be a logical continuation of the brand. But who am I to say anything? I guess we all just have to wait and see.”

For what it’s worth, our little birdy close to Dior says the staff is very excited about the possibility of Simons at the helm (of both Dior and Dior Homme)–even if Valentino isn’t.
