Love Looks Not with the Eyes: Thirteen Years with Lee Alexander McQueen

Lee Alexander McQueen (1969–2010), whose design combined visionary aesthetics, emotional power, and extraordinary craft, was known for staging provocative shows that were as much performances as venues to display his couture creations. Charged with energy, informed by history and culture, and filled with fresh concepts, McQueen’s shows have become legends not only of fashion but also of art. Anne Deniau was the only photographer allowed backstage by McQueen for 13 years, beginning in September 1997 and ending with the final show in March 2010. She captured McQueen working with his close circle of collaborators—including designer Sarah Burton, milliner Philip Treacy, jewelry designer Shaun Leane, and model Kate Moss—to create his meticulously produced spectacles. Her book offers an inspiring homage, through the art of photography, to the work of a great artist.

Chanel the Vocabulary of Style by Jérôme Gautier

Chanel the Vocabulary of StyleChanel
The Vocabulary of Style

This innovative volume pairs classic and contemporary photographs, placing fashion plates from Chanel's time alongside those by the house's designer-in-chief, Karl Lagerfeld. For instance, Cecil Beaton's portrait of Chanel appears alongside Lagerfeld's image of Cate Blanchett emulating her, and a classic plate by Henry Clarke flanks an arresting shot by Juergen Teller.

Through these dazzling photographs, Chanel: The Vocabulary of Style identifies key elements that have defined Chanel's style for generations, such as jersey and tweed, formerly considered menswear fabrics, and the little black dress, which transformed a hue previously reserved for mourning into a statement of elegance. Pearls were her staple, and she often embellished outfits with her signature camellia. Eleven chapters compare the original forms of these enduring trademarks with their later expressions over the years and to the present day, letting the vocabulary of Chanel's style speak for itself.

Classic Chanel Jacket Book Preview

Elle Fanning, styled by Carine Roitfeld and photographed by Karl Lagerfeld

Carine Roitfeld has dropped hints about working with Karl Lagerfeld on an upcoming book, and now there's photographic proof. A preview — and details about the collaboration — are in the new issue of V magazine, on newsstands tomorrow, Nov. 9.

The project, which is still being produced, centers around the classic black Chanel tweed jacket. Lagerfeld has been shooting (and Roitfeld styling) portraits of stylish women (and a couple of men) of varying ages and occupations — think actors, models, and heiresses — wearing the jacket, in order to explore the many different ways it can be worn. "This jacket is a vital and irrational impulse open to creativity and transformation," Lagerfeld explains, adding: "Especially in the hands of Carine Roitfeld."

The Rise of FASHION & Lessons Learned at Bergdorf Goodman

The Rise of Fashion and Lessons Learned at Bergdorf GoodmanDescription:
From lavish events attended by high-profile personalities such as Princess Diana, Margaret Thatcher, Jacqueline Onassis, and Yves Saint Laurent to the latest creative ventures of Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Michael Kors and Donald Trump, Ira Neimark, the legendary leader of fashion luxury retail, recounts how he and his talented fashion and merchandising team brought Bergdorf Goodman to its leadership position an approach, he shows, that continues to inform the most successful designers and business leaders today. While his personal anecdotes focus on how and why Bergdorf helped build the fashion industry during one of the most exciting periods in its history the late sixties through the early nineties the author also shares his views on how contemporary retailers have increased profits by skimping on service, resulting in the loss of customer loyalty. The Rise of Fashion and Lessons Learned at Bergdorf Goodman is a valuable resource for anyone who aspires to succeed in the business of luxury fashion.

About the Author
Ira-portraitIra Neimark is a legendary retail executive whose career spans several decades. As Chairman and CEO of Bergdorf Goodman he set records for the company over 17 years of his masterful leadership. During his tenure, he opened the largest luxury Men?s Store on Fifth Avenue. He also distinguished himself in top management/merchandising posts at Neiman Marcus Group, B. Altman, G. Fox, Gladdings, and Bonwit Teller.

WWD:

WWD: In the book, you said leading Bergdorf’s was like living “la dolce vita.” Was it really like that?
Goodman-hankin-fox-neimarky1975Ira Neimark: It was very glamorous. You are involved with all these society people, but you have to rise to the occasion. I appreciated meeting people and recognizing talent, sharing their success with ours. You go to Europe three or four times a year and I flew on the Concorde. I enjoyed all the parties, particularly in Europe. However, every night after work, I left my briefcase at the door and spent as much time with my family as I could.

Christian Louboutin Collaborated with David Lynch and John Malkovich on His First Book, Out Next Month

Christian Louboutin, one of the world’s
most celebrated shoe designers, has completed his first book and it promises to be be more than just pretty pictures of stilettos. While his name may be more closely associated with red-soled Hollywood starlets than anything else, the man is truly an artist who is passionate about and dedicated to his craft. So perhaps that’s why people like John Malkovich and David Lynch have signed on as collaborators.
Christian Louboutin [Rizzoli] is like a biography, retrospective and photography book all rolled into one. Following a foreword by legendary actor/producer John Malkovich, there will be one chapter devoted to his biography, including his work for Chanel and Yves Saint Laurent and never-before-seen personal photos; one chapter focusing on the interiors of his boutiques around the world; one chapter devoted to his “20 years of design” including still life portraits and editorials; one chapter with shots of his homes in Paris and Egypt and his studios and workshops; and one chapter devoted to his collaboration with filmmaker David Lynch called “Fetish,” a series of photographs of Louboutin’s limited-edition fetish shoes, which have been shown in galleries but never published in a book.
The final of the six chapters will be a complete catalogue of Louboutin’s work, according to Barnes & Noble‘s overview.
Their collaborations with Louboutin are not the only fashion endeavors for Malkovich, who has a line of suits called Technobohemian, or Lynch, who directed Marion Cotillard’s Dior commercial. According to Vogue UK, there will also be contributions by Dita Von Teese, Kristen Scott Thomas and Mika.
Books by fashion designers can sometimes be a bit boring and predictable, but this one sounds pretty awesome. Plus, how gorgeous would that look on a coffee table? Apparently, it even has a five-piece foldout binding and a pop-up. Want.
