Hollywoods Most Requested Brow

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What is considered attractive today wasn't always the case a few years ago. One of the most dramatic, ever-changing facial features are the eyebrows. Face-framing and enhancing, these small arches can have a huge impact on your look. Just like hair and makeup styles, the evolution of their shape has changed significantly—even within the last decade! For a fun look back, we chatted with Hollywood's top eyebrow guru Anastasia Soare about the most requested celebrity arches over the last 15 years.

In the late '90s it was all about the supermodel shape! That meant delicate, unfilled, barely-there brows. "Kate Moss (left) and Naomi Campbell were the most requested," recalls Anastasia. "The look was pencil thin, like a dramatic old movie star from the '20s or '30s." But overly-tweezed arches weren't the only fad. Model Kristen McMenamy even shaved off her brows when she rose to fame.

In the five years that followed the millennium, Jennifer Lopez's fashion and makeup choices weren't the only thing millions of women were obsessed with. Her meticulously groomed, well-defined arches became the must-have shape. "Jennifer has great eyebrows and she has been the trendsetter in eyebrow style for a long time," says Anastasia, who works with the American Idol judge (left). "Halle Berry and Catherine Zeta-Jones were also really popular at the time and have a similar style."

"DIAMONDS ON THE SOLES OF HER SHOES: Stuart Weitzman’s infamous "Million Dollar Shoe" — which celebrates its tenth anniversary this year — will make another comeback, just in time for Oscar season. The original version, which debuted at the 2002 Academy Awards on "Mulholland Drive" star Laura Harring, was adorned with 464 diamonds. With an updated design, the 2012 edition, dubbed the "Millionairess," comes detailed with Swarovski crystal straps and a crystal tear-drop. The sandal, featured in a new advertising campaign with Natalia Vodianova and shot by Mario Testino, will be available nationwide exclusively at Stuart Weitzman boutiques in February for $595."

Winter-proofing Brown Skin

I have a theory: mechanics and makeup artists are equally busy during the winter. Think about it: As meteorologists forecast snowfall and icy roads, local auto handymen start rolling up their sleeves to weather-proof clients' vehicles for optimal performance amidst "the elements." Though makeup artists aren't breaking the sweat induced by balancing a new set of snow tires, they definitely have to flex their expertise to help bring out brown skin's summer radiance during the chilly off-season.
Like many women of color, when it's warm my skin can't lose! The sun and heightened temperatures bring out our golden undertones and natural oils, giving us a unique glow. But, as the clouds roll in and frost descends, those glow-provoking properties appear to fly south with the local bird population. Winter bouts with flattened tone and lack of luster soon rear their ugly heads, and we're left in search of tips and tricks to help in revving up our skin tone and texture.
As a woman of color and celebrity makeup artist, Tia Dantzler has worked to bring out the best in brown skin throughout her career—no matter what the season! With clients ranging from singer/actress Jennifer Hudson to President Barack Obama, Tia's talents are tried and true and she stands as a go-to authority in beauty for brown girls and beyond! I tapped this guru for her insights on helping brown girls stay bold in the cold.

Ruddy complexions in the winter can start with dryness onset by brisk winds and lower humidity. Tia suggests opting for a heavier moisturizer to hydrate skin and protect from the colder temperatures. Once skin is supple, it's on to picking the right palette and applying the proper techniques to add radiance and color back into the face. "To bring life into the complexion, I do a lot of highlighting and contouring," shares Tia. She suggests brown girls use a darker powder (one shade deeper than the complexion) around the perimeter of the face using a big powder brush. Then follow with highlighter on the cheekbones and bridge of the nose for a radiant glow. When asked for her rules of the road for navigating brown skin in the winter, Tia offers her top makeup Do and Don't:
DO: "Do be daring! People can get stuck in a rut. Step out of the box."
DON'T: "Don't be caught with the wrong foundation color. Once your summer tan lifts, swap out your summer tone for a winter shade to ensure you have the right blend and coverage."
And when daring to step out of that proverbial box, brown girls should fear not the absence of abundant warm tones amidst winter makeup palettes. Brown skin can be equally flattered by cool tones—from frosty pinks to dusty purples and rich blues.

Alberta Ferretti's Impulse collection

Alberta Ferretti's Impulse collection hits Macy's stores April 17. Inspired by the Amalfi Coast, the 30-piece capsule is comprised of peasant blouses, abstract floral prints, and voile dresses, and will be priced from $49 to $119. "The collection I created is fresh and bright, featuring light summer clothing that evokes the spirit of my beautiful country and is at the same time true to my style," Ferretti explained. "She appeals to an international consumer as well as an American consumer, and her fabrications are very soft, very feminine, chiffon-like, drapy, comfortable and really pretty, yet they look very elegant," Macy’s executive vice president of marketing, Martine Reardon, said of the retailer's choice to collaborate with Ferretti. The collection will be available in 185 Macy's stores nationwide for ten weeks.

Designers Disappointed by CFDA's Impending Relocation

The CFDA has decided to move from its current location in the Garment District to a new residence in downtown Manhattan, leaving some New York designers none too pleased. "We are extremely disappointed by the CFDA's decision to leave the Garment Center," said Nanette LePore, whose husband, Bob Savage, has been a staunch proponent of the Save the Garment Center campaign. "We only hope this does not signal the end of their previous support for New York City manufacturing and emerging American designers."

For its part, the CFDA has stressed that the decision has nothing to do with a lack of support for the Garment District, a neighborhood the CFDA has always championed. "We are not abandoning anything," The CFDA's chief executive officer, Steven Kolb, told WWD. "We considered buildings in the Garment District significantly in our search. The criteria by which we were finding space was ultimately based not on neighborhood, but what the best space for a functioning office for the CFDA was." Kolb went on to say that the Council had outgrown its current space, adding "we are busting out of the seams."

CFDA President Diane von Furstenberg echoed the sentiment: "We needed a very large space so we can have board meetings and clinics there. We found a great space with a great deal, and that's that. We looked for a long time." Von Furstenberg added that she will always think of the CFDA as "the soul of the Garment District."

The CFDA has signed a 10-year lease at its new location at Bleecker Street and Broadway, with plans to move this Summer.

Harper’s Bazaar March 2012

Harper’s Bazaar March 2012 Gwyneth Paltrow by Terry Richardson

Harper’s Bazaar March 2012. Gwyneth Paltrow by Terry Richardson.

Here’s how the new Harper’s Bazaar can be summed up: it’s like the party guest who you recognize when she enters the room, but you know she’s had work done — a lot of work.

The magazine is larger by one inch, the paper quality is noticeably thicker and there is new cover typography. Inside the issue, the pages look less cluttered and thrown together, with more white space, while sections are more tightly edited. So far, there’s less celebrity and the related popcorn stories that can come with that. But in some ways, it still feels like the old Harper’s Bazaar. The black logo is the same. The emphasis is still on high fashion. [WWD]
