Will You Wear 2012’s Hottest Color?

Color-lovers around the world have already heard the latest news in hues—2012’s hottest shade is themuy caliente Tangerine Tango. A much more vibrant tone than 2011's salmon-colored Honeysuckle, the new saturated red-orange hue emanates heat and passion. During fashion week last September, designers Jen Kao, Wes Gordon, and Peter Som swiped, painted, and streaked the orange tone on lips, nails, and hair for their spring 2012 shows. "Beauty and fashion are so intertwined, you couldn't think of one without the other,” says Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute and one of the world's leading authorities on color. "Because we're living in tougher times, people need a little color and excitement—it’s an energetic shade.”
Leatrice leads one of the most prestigious color forecasting companies in the world, but how exactly do they predict the future’s popular hues? It's a trickier process than you may think. "Forecasters look at the big picture. We're in different cities looking at various cultures—we see how color is used globally," says Leatrice. "We also do some pretty pragmatic research to scout the latest trends, films, and current events. What's popular in home furnishing or car finishes? What new technologies and textures are out there? We really have to look ahead."
We’re already peering into spring, when Pantone will launch their first-ever Color of the Year beauty collection in collaboration with Sephora. "We've paid careful attention to accurately represent Tangerine Tango in a range of textures and finishes," says SVP of Sephora Merchandising Margarita Arriagada. The limited-edition range will feature an eye shadow quad, harmonized eye liner set, lipstick, lip gloss, nail polish, and Pantone accessories.
We can’t wait for this collection to launch in March, but if you’re craving a quick Tangerine Tango fix, Beautylish recommends Essence Colour & Go Nail Polish in Wake Up, Milani Color Perfect Lipstick in 42 Mandarina, and Nars Blush in Exhibit A.

10 Fashion Exhibitions You Won’t Want to Miss in 2012

Given the record-breaking success of this year’s Alexander McQueen retrospective at the Met, museums would be smart to put more fashion in their halls. And if today’s piece in WWD on museums “getting fashionable” is any indication, they are. Harold Koda, curator in charge of The Costume Institute at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, told the trade, “Clearly the critical as well as popular success of the McQueen show suggests that fashion design has a more secure place in the precincts of an art museum.”
While any museum would be hard-pressed to recreate the magic that was “Savage Beauty,” more fashion exhibits are popping up all over the world and several big ones are already on track to debut next year.
From Diana Vreeland to James Bond to the CFDA, here’s a list of fashion exhibitions you won’t want to miss in 2012. (Click the links to get more details)

Cathy Horyn’s Year-End Fashion Roundup: Here’s What She Loved (McQueen) and Wants to Forget (Kim Kardashian and the Roaring 20s)

This is the time for year-end lists and reflection, and when it comes to fashion, we always look forward to what Cathy Horyn has to say. The Times published a slideshow today of what Horyn has deemed the top fashion moments of 2011 and believe it or not, she didn’t like everything.
Her top 10 list, in which she gives her take on what she felt were the biggest fashion moments and events of the year, includes the Alexander McQueen Met exhibit, Sarah Burton’s royal wedding designs, John Galliano’s fall from grace, as well as some less obvious choices such as a dress Giovanna Battaglia wore to Cannes, Olivier Theyskens’ success at Theory and, weirdly, Pop Phones: landline-style handsets that you attach to your cell phone with a cord. Apparently they’re a thing and editors were using them in the front rows? She also nails into the redundancy of 1920s-inspired clothes on the spring runways, justifiably praising Prada and Balenciaga for going against the grain:
Yawn — oh, excuse me! Were we talking about the 1920s fashion on the spring runways, all that Jazz Age fringe and glitter? If you want something purely silly for your next Match date, you’ll get yourself a pair of Prada’s hot rod stilettos. Despite the number of designers working today, most scamper toward the same themes: sports, the Roaring ’20s. So the machismo of Prada was appealing. Just as delightfully odd were the patchwork dresses at Balenciaga shown with wide-brimmed hats that resembled Darth Vader’s helmet. Some complained that the floaty dresses looked heavy. And a tinseled flapper dress doesn’t?
On that note, she also provided a list of “A few fashion moments to clear from your mind.” Here they are as-is, in Horyn’s signature caustic voice. We have to agree with most of them, but does the fact that every fashion editor started wearing those Miu Miu booties really make them any less cute?

Revealed: Never-Before-Seen Shots

Herb Ritts, the fashion photographer who rose to fame in the 80s and 90s, was known for his work in black and white, and for making humans look like classic sculpture. He became more popular in pop culture circles after he famously shot videos for Madonna (“Cherish,” one of the best videos ever), Janet Jackson, and Michael Jackson. NOWNESS has some newly-revealed and never-before-seen shots from the photographer, who died in 2002. They feature a youngNaomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Johnny Depp, David Bowie and Karl Lagerfeld (when he still had dark hair). NOWNESS also chatted with some notables (like Anna Wintour) who knew Ritts back in the day. Here’s what a few of them said about him:
Richard Gere: “Some photographers embalm their subjects, but he enlivened them.”
Anna Wintour: “He would call a lot. He would call when an issue came out and want to go over it even if he hadn’t contributed to it, or he’d call to see how his covers sold.”
Cindy Crawford: “I think he photographs women the way they want to look… Herb would always get you naked. You knew that’s the way it went, you are going to look good.”
Naomi Campbell: “All of us experienced pain with Herb, but the pain was worth it. You want one of those photographs in your lifetime of modeling.”
